A Night To Remember - the idol finals performance review

I Gotta Feeling...woo hoo....
And I think everyone had that 'feeling' as the big screen split open to reveal the Top 2. Here's my review of the performance show...blow by blow.

Eventhough I've seen that opening sequence like a gazillion times during rehearsals and even with full wardrobe and makeup on, nothing beats the combined effect with the deafening screams of a packed arena.

In fact the minute the flash mob burst out from the stage, the screams began and when the Top 12 (minus the Airi and SylSyl) marched out and 'posed', my heart was thumping - 'We're here! We're finally here at the Grand Finals....tonight's gonna be a good good night.....'

This vid is taken from when the Top 2 make their entrance...

Click here to watch the rehearsal for this number at Indoor Stadium and the choreo session at Mediacorp's training school. You gotta look out for that awesome 'criss-cross' move that they do that didn't get captured on the show - it was my fave part, but the camera was focused on the mosh and the LED lights, wasted much?...oh well.

That aside, I thought it was a great adrenaline-pumping opening. The very first time I saw it back at training school, I was thrown! :) I just couldn't wait, and I love how producers chose to use current songs that everyone would know and could stomp their feet/wave their hands to.

After all the fanfare, it was time to get the competition started. First up for the night - Miss Sylvia Anne Ratonel. She won the coin toss during the Last Spectacular and chose to go first. Her opening number would be her best song for the season, which is 'Mercy' (from Sylvia's Piano Show, click here to watch that performance). They totally upped the ante for this number on all counts - wardrobe, choreo, dancers, makeup etc. I thought it was just awesome!

Sylvia was in her element doing this song. And the black elbow gloves, super shiny short dress and slick moves truly gave 'Mercy' a totally different feel and an edge. It really took 'Mercy' from the small Piano Show stage to the huge Indoor Stadium stage. Click here to watch Sylvia's rehearsal at indoor stadium and also at training school (parts 1, 2 and 3).

Next up is Airi with his best song of the season, 'Virtual Insanity' (from Spectacular 9 'You Asked For It, click here to watch that performance'). Again, both Airi and producers took it to the next level with dancers and great choreo and lighting. The 'feel' was so cool and chic! Watch!

I really loved that he started and ended the song in a lounge-y armchair. Seriously coolcat stuff. Watch his rehearsal footage at choreo here, this was the first time I watched his performance and even then without the costumes and large stage, you can see it oozes coolness to the max.

Round #1 - Best Song of the Season
JUDGES' COMMENTS :
Sylvia
D : I'm so happy you chose that song, that is the song that identifies you. And hearing it now after all these months, its like a million times better.
F : That didn't feel like a competition, it felt like you had your own show. You are a femme fatale, a showgirl, that was through-the-roof excellent!
K : That was very professional.

Sezairi
D : That was just amazing, and beautiful. I always mentioned you were awkward but tonight finally it just all came together, fantastic!
F : The cool cat is in the house, you've got a very quietly confident prowl to your movements - on the surface looks just cool, but underneath its deadly and lethal. You are proof that you don't have to be over-the-top. You can be quietly confident and totally likeable, congratulations!
K : Out of all the other contestants, you are the one that worked the most diligently on the judges' comments. Today you were smooth, entertaining and personable in your own way, you are not the copy cat that you were.

summerr's take :
Score! I love it when the DFK give good comments. Watching back the show, I found both performances equally good vocally. Both Idols came off smooth, slick and confident too. But where Sylvia had the upper hand was the choreo, somehow the overall effect of the dance and lights and colour seemed more vibrant, and the fact that Mercy is currently more popular. Virtual Insanity is a fairly old (but good) song. So I'll have to agree with Ken that Round #1 goes to Sylvia.

The next round of competition features new songs chosen by the Top 2.
Sylvia decides to go with Coldplay hit 'Yellow'. I loved how she was styled for this song. The dress was perfect and so was her hair. She was just utterly gorgeous. Again, the use of gloves (only one kid glove this time) just made her even more chic.

Watch earlier videos of Sylvia deciding on this song (Part 1 & 2) and the instrumental arrangement for her here.

Under the same category, Sezairi decides on 'Crazy'. Airi + guitar = awesome! I so totally totally love this performance - even now, watching the youtube vid, I sing along and toss my hair (yes I do random things like that!). Great job on this one, Airi totally rawked it, so much so you hardly notice only ONE pant leg is sequined ;) LOL - its meant to be that way btw.

Click here to see the vid I recorded of him at keycheck when he was trying to decide whether or not go with this song - I'm so glad he did because it was TOTALLY AWESOME!

Round #2 : Idol's Own Song Choice
JUDGES' COMMENTS :
Sylvia
D : D'you know why you're here tonight? I'll tell you why you're here tonight. Every performance you have ever done has been very unique, consistently good and your interpretation of the songs you choose, like the song you chose tonight, I think you just take it to another level.
F : I'm so blown away right now I don't even know what to say, you're not singing like a contestant, you're singing like a winner!
K : I thought Mercy was better tho'. You have been the most consistent vocalist this season, but this competition is also about your ability to connect with the viewers so your next song is your last chance to show the viewers how you feel from the heart. Nothing beats an emotional performance and I think thats what's lacking in this performance.

Sezairi
D : When I first heard that you were gonna sing this song I thought, 'Oh what strange choice of song to pick', but you know what, it showed off your musicianship and thats why you're here tonight!
F : You have just raised the bar, and then some...
K : Round 1-Sylvia, Round 2-Sezairi

summerr's take :
If I had to compare both performances, I'd have to agree with Ken, that Airi won this round. His performance was solid and pitch perfect! But looking at both performances individually, and remembering how it felt back at the stadium and then watching it again on tv, I think they both really pulled out all the stops.
Initially at the stadium, I felt Sylvia was holding back as I could not hear some parts, then watching it on youtube, I was moved. Watching it again on tv, I was also moved by her heartfelt rendition of Yellow. She looked a little stressed no doubt, but if you just listen to her voice, it will move you.
Airi's 'Crazy' had me whooping and yeah-ing and up on my feet singing along. Fantastic song choice and he totally worked-it-out. It is 'cover-worthy' if Universal Music agrees to put it on his debut album (I really hope they do!). Plus, Airi with a guitar is totally sexy!

In this final round, the Top 2 go head-to-head with the Winner's Single 'Touched By An Angel', written by Uncle Ken himself - designed to push both to their limits and force them to emote.
First up is Sylvia in a gorgeous $4000-designer gown. She really did look like an 'angel'. Backed by the choir, this last showdown really does feel like the peak of the competition.

Next up, Airi in a pearly white suit (I don't know how much this one cost), looking like the 'groom' to Sylvia's 'bride'. Seriously, its like you could shrink them and they'd look right at home on the top of wedding cake. Ok, nuff nonsense, watch...

Round #3 : Winner's Single - "Touched By An Angel"
Sylvia
D : We've seen you do so many kinds of songs but I've never seen you do anything like that, I mean, you've turned into a diva :) and you look really fantastic, I think its really all come together in this one song, very well done!
F : I have no doubts about your ability Sylvia, now I wanna give you a chance to tell the viewers why you should be their Singapore Idol ...
Syl : To all my fans and my kebyan thank you so much for bringing me this far. Whatever happens tonight, I am very very lucky, so I want to thank you with all my heart.
K : Throughout the competition both you and Sezairi were picking songs that you were comfortable for yourself to sing, so when I wrote that song, I wanted to make sure that you're stretched to the limits in order to emote, and I saw that that probably topped your Mercy performance. Well done.

Sezairi
D : I wanna say something to you, I want to put some fears of yours to rest, YOU are HERE. You know why you're here? Because you DESERVE to be here. You are a very good musician. In the years I've been in the business I've been waiting to see a new artiste like you, and now we have one, so, thank you for that!
F : The thing about you Sezairi, you don't have polarised audience reactions, you sit very comfortably in that middle ground, and you OWN that middle ground. Do not underestimate your likeability and your chances of winning tonight ever. Tell Singapore why you should be their Singapore Idol.
Airi : This whole journey has taught me that people love more than they hate. The proof of that love is right here.
K : Musically I think you are better than Sylvia. In terms of image, I don't think I need to answer that question. But in terms of vocals and performance, I think you both are very different, because its a question of choice. But either way, I think singapore should be happy with either you winning or Sylvia winning. Good luck.

summerr's take :
Both The Husband and another good friend felt Sylvia totally nailed this one. Perhaps I was too aware of the stress she was under, but I felt that I had seen her do better at rehearsals. That said, it is NOT a bad performance, in fact it was very very good indeed. Its just that I ended up connecting with Airi's rendition more - something that surprised me too, because from the first time I heard it, it felt like the song was written for Sylvia, and she totally became the song. I was blown away by her the first time she sang it to me, and back then, I thought, gosh, its in the bag for Sylvia. So surprisingly to me, on Sunday night, it was Airi who made me cry.
Watching it back on tv and on youtube, I dare say both were on form vocally. Like Ken says, they are both different types of performers because they choose to be.

Overall, I think both Airi and Syl are worthy contenders who put up a seriously good fight. Both upped their games, and gave their all. Top 2, indeed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show, live at Indoor Stadium and again, watching it back on tv (I recorded it on my Hubstation). Thank you Airi and Sylvia for entertaining us with all your heart and soul - it was truly a night to remember.

"I feel like a winner already." Well said Sylvia.

3 hours to go! OMG!!!!

3 HOURS TO GO!!!!!!
Rehearsals are full swing, and here's a peek at some Idol randomness! Check it out, while I go back to where the action is....follow my tweets for updates and twitpics! :)

Tabby is cute right? :)

xoxo, s.

9 Hours To Go.....

Time is just FLYING BY!
In 2 hours, your Top 2 will be reporting at Indoor Stadium for the biggest night of their lives. For Sylvia Ratonel and Sezairi Sezali, their Idol journey is about to hit its peak.

I'll be heading down to Indoor Stadium later at about 3pm, but before that, I have a video to share. Ages and ages ago (about 4 and a half months ago), someone sent me a demo for a great 'Idol song' written specifically for this season's Idol winner. I was just asked to listen and give comments, and truth be told, I was sold from the first demo eventhough it was very raw. The lyrics and melody are all uplifting - characteristic of an Idol winning single. But ultimately, the song selected to be the Idol single would be Uncle Ken's 'Touched By An Angel'. (I'm guessing there were other songs thrown up and the most suitable was chosen).

Anyway, I still think this is a great song, and I've just seen this vid by Izked and he's using the song I mentioned above. For whatever reason, he has not revealed the singer/composer, so I'll keep it as that as well. Suffice it to say, the boys who wrote this *wink* are the coolest and so very very talented. Kudos to you for such a beautiful song!

Now watch this, a very touching video of your Top 2, made by Official Blogger Iz, you made me cry dude! This is a great way to remember their journey - better than the usual exit VTs on the show!

Look out for more updates via my tweets later today!

I gotta feeling....woo hooo....
xoxo, s.

ps. OMG OMG OMG FINAL IDOL DAY!!!!!!

18 hours to go..

It's Idol Day!
2am on Idol Day, I'm super duper excited for the show later tonight. The thought of the results gives makes me anxious, so I'm compartmentalising and not focusing on that so much, would rather focus on the amazing performances lined up for viewers all night.

Here's what we can expect to see...
Performance Show :
1. Look out for a very cool opening sequence. If you'd read this blog, you already know the opening song is a medley of I've Gotta Feeling-Bad Romance-Boom Boom Pow. What you gotta look out for is the very start of the show - there are gonna be some familiar faces to look out for, and also, look out for the chemistry between the Top 2 during Bad Romance :) Sizzle!

2. Look at the left sidebar to see what your Top 2 are singing.

3. Wardrobe! I am so blown away by each of the Top 2's outfits/styling for each of their songs. The opening outfit is okay. But the individual outfits for each song, especially Crazy, Yellow and Touched By An Angel (they both look like 'earthbound' angels) are just breathtaking. Your Top 2 really glow, they've definitely stepped it up since the last time you saw them 2 and a half weeks ago.

4. Voting lines open at 8pm and will be closing 15 minutes later than usual, at 10.15pm. Make those precious extra 15 minutes COUNT you guys! Vote for talent!

Results Show
So many things to look forward to!
1. Taufik Batisah is performing! Yes! Your very first Singapore Idol is returning to the Idol stage and performing his latest, a brand new song called 'Addicted'. I watched him during rehearsals today, still one of the hardest working people I know, and he's awesome. Slick dance moves, LIVE awesome singing, catchy beats and a sexy-killer wink to die for. MUST WATCH!

2. Hady Mirza is performing! Our very own Asian Idol and as Gurmit likes to call him, 'Idol Big Brother', will be performing his first English single, 'I'll Never Leave You Again'. Its such a beautiful song, you WILL be blown away, Hady's voice is amazing, AND he wrote this song. :) Hady also joins forces 'Idol Band' which includes a secret guest bandmember guaranteed not to disappoint, to sing 'Use Somebody' - very very good!

3. Idol alums from Season 2 are performing with some of our Top 12 - Nurul Maideen, Gayle Nerva and Mathilda D'Silva join Tabby and Sylvia for a cool 'Divas' number singing 'Free Your Mind'. And Paul Twohill and Joakim Gomez join Farhan and Faizal for a 'Boyband' number. Check out my previous link to watch rehearsal vids.

4. Charice Pempengco's guest performance.
The Youtube starlet who made it to Oprah's soundstage will be gracing the Idol stage for a mini-medley and her single 'A Note To God', which incidentally was recorded before by Jojo (Duane was the one who enlightened me). Little girl with a big voice, I've yet to hear her live, she's only comin' in today at like 4pm, from what I've seen on Youtube, she's sure to wow. I've gotta make sure I'm next to Amira to catch her reaction cos she's a huge fan (and probably also catch her in case she faints! LOL!)

5. Top 12's 'Spectacular Recap' Medley. The main themes highlighted are 'A Tribute To Michael Jackson' (Airi, Faizal and Charlie sing 'Smooth Criminal'), 'An Asian Feast' (Malaque, Farhan and Nurul sing Kylie's 'Chiggy Wiggy') and 'Mambo Mania' (Mae, Duane, Justin and Amira sing 'Hey Mickey'). I have no idea what Spec 'When Love Takes Over' is for LOL!

6. And of course, the ACTUAL results....

With so much to look forward to, how can you not tune in right? Spread the word, the Idol Grand Finals is gonna be a night to remember.

Producers are going all out - expect pyrotechnics, confetti blower and a crew of awesome dancers. Plus, with Indra's LIVE band (and Indra himself stepping up to the piano for a number of performances) and Ann's back-up singers, each song just sounds so much better and fuller. Its a full-on concert!

Those comin' to Indoor Stadium are in for a treat. During the half-hour break (when News is on), you'll get to experience LIVE performances by Tabby, Charlie and Faizal, and possibly Hady too!
Sidetrack, speaking of live performances, standing in during full dress rehearsals for Charice Pempengco today were Gayle Nerva and Mathilda D'Silva. Props to both for pulling off those big songs. Extra props to Mathilda D'Silva for a SUPER amazing adlib performance of 'A Note To God'. She didn't know the song at all, so while the music played, she made up her own song, and it sounded pretty good! She was also hilarious, hamming it up along the way! I have tons of vids to share, and they will all go up tomorrow night after the show. :)

Ok, thats it...gotta go now, its 3am....17 hours to tx.

OMG!
xoxo, s.

Quickie Update : Today's choreo session

Quickie Post : Are you Starstrukk?

LOL. I have a feeling our Top 12 will be once the guest artiste who's supposed to be performing this with them steps in to join them for final choreo rehearsals at Indoor on Saturday.

Highlight of the day?
Our Top 12 got a little whipping when exasperated choreoKing Zaki threw a hissy fit after the 800th time they did the routine with the same mistakes. Miraculously, the next three rounds were flawless :) More on that later...

I'm off to catch their full choreo rehearsals with dancers shortly, so thought I'd post this first - tis a sign of more vids to come later tonight when I get home :)

You are so gonna lurve the 'Bad Romance' vid....there is fire and sizzle I tell you...its gonna be an awesome show!

Later.
xoxo, s.

ps. Airi and Sylvia will be on TONIGHT's Malay news bulletin on Suria at 8pm (repeat at 11.30pm) in case you wanna catch it!

Zaki's whipping time....choreo sessions!

Wa-tissssshhhhhhhh!
(thats the sound of a whip cracking in case you didn't get it -_-)

Now that Ann's all done with the Idols and the alums (everyone knows what they're singing, when and with whom), its over to Zaki to whip them into stage shape.

As reported in an earlier post, Sunday onwards, would be choreo-choreo-choreo until they head to the Indoor Stadium for full rehearsals. On Monday, season 2 alums Nurul Maideen, Gayle Nerva, Paul Twohill, Joakim Gomez and Mathilda D'Silva turned up to join this season's Idols.

I arrived just as Airi was heading off (he wasn't needed for today's sessions), and who JUST arrived but a rather late Mr Paul Twohill. His opening shot was 'Zaki's gonna kill me...again, I'm always late wan!' :) Funny guy that Paul. As it turns out, when we arrive at choreo, its not his turn yet, the girls are still doing their 'diva' thang.

Sylvia, Tabby, Nurul, Gayle and Mathilda are doing a 'diva' number with En Vogue's 'Free Your Mind' and its hawt! Check out the vids below...

While the girls were perfecting their hair-ography (its a Glee term for when people use hair flicks and flips while dancing) and 'bend-and-snaps', I found the boys - Farhan, Faizal, Paul and Joakim Gomez in the ping-pong room, doing what else...playing ping pong.

This is actually the first time I'm getting a chance to actually talk any of the Idol Season 2 alums. I saw them at the charity carwash, but didn't really get a chance to introduce myself. We got to chatting, me and the boyz, and I have to say, I wish I could have seen what their journey was like.

While we swapped Idol stories and inside jokes, and the 2 boys from last season compared notes with the 2 boys from this season ('You're so lucky you got Ann, she's so nice, Babes (referring to Season 1 & 2's vocal coach Babes Conde) whipped us man!'), I was busy twitpiccing :)

Joakim recounted his 'haters' and Paul relived his drama (apparently he was so stressed he once went up to producers in tears, 'I can't do this anymore, just kick me off the show please!'), while Faizal and Farhan grilled them for gossip!

Soon, it was time for the boys to go in for their session. Here is their vid...

While the boys were busy with that, I stepped out for a quick chat with the girls - Nurul, Gayle, Sylvia and Tabby. I have no idea where Mathilda went. Similarly, the girls also exchanged notes, advice and idol goss.

Soon, it was time to go back in to combine both performances - the full segment would be Idol Boyband versus the Idol Divas. Here's the vid, unfortunately, my audio got muted by YouTube for some copyright thing - have asked Izked to help me edit the video a little and upload it for me - will replace it as soon as he does. In the meantime, enjoy the visuals :)

That was Monday.....today (technically yesterday since its 3.45am on Wednesday right now), choreo sessions were solely for the Top 12, and it was like being reunited all over again, and also like being in a 3-ring circus. One group would be in choreo with Zaki, another in the ping pong room playing, and another in the vocal training room watching tv. :) But they were quite efficient today nonetheless.
Some random ping-pong playing ....

The Top12 medley (to be performed at the Results Show) is made up of
Segment #1 - Smooth Criminal - Airi, Faizal & Charles
Segment #2 - Chiggy Wiggy - Malaque, Nurul & Farhan
Segment #3 - Hey Mickey - Mae, Duane, Justin & Amira
Segment #4 - When Love Takes Over - Sylvia & Tabitha

Here are the vids from today's choreo sessions... (missed out Smooth Criminal cos they were done like super fast!)
'Chiggy Wiggy' - Malaque, Farhan & Nurul

'Hey Mickey' - Mae, Duane, Justin & Amira

And here's the full medley item. Tabby & Sylvia's item, 'When Love Takes Over' is the last. I recorded it from two different cam angles so we wouldn't miss anyone out :)

Camera angle #2.

Well, hope you enjoyed all that. That was today's hard work for the Idols. Tomorrow (or today, Wednesday, more choreo sessions lined up. All Idols were asked to report to MediaCorp today at 9.30am. Two more items on the list that need choreo - Hady & the 'Idol Band' and 'Starstrukk' for the Top 12.

The 'Idol Band' consists of Sezairi, Duane & Charles (the ones who play instruments thus 'band') and they'll be performing 'Use Somebody' with Hady. While for 'Starstrukk' the Top 12 will be performing with a guest artiste - guess who? :) In case you're wondering what 'Use Somebody' and 'Starstrukk' sound like, here are the youtube vids.

Charice Pempengco will be performing two songs - 'I Have Nothing' and her own song 'A Note To God'. Here are vids of Charice performing those two songs on Oprah. For more info on Charice, check out her wikipedia page or her website.

Note To God (written by Diane Warren & Produced by David Foster)

Phew, 4.30am, ok thats all for me from now. More tomorrow... good night/morning!

xoxo, s.

ps. To those who are wondering, both Airi and Syl have an EQUAL number of performances for Sunday night - 7 a piece!

My night at Ann's...

Vocal Training at Ann Hussein's...
So it was a Saturday, and I'd missed a full week of Idol activity cos I'd taken The Kids to KL to see The Grandfather. For which I got chided for by some readers, but defended by others (for which I am eternally grateful, nice to know there are people who'll come up to bat for you :)), single-parenting (The Husband was left in Singapore) does not a free blogger make.

Anyhoo, I made The Husband drive out to KL on a Friday just so he could bring us back here on Saturday in time for the roadshow at The Heeren (6.30pm). But true to form, Malaysian immigration decided to keep just a measley four counters open to serve the gazillion (ok, maybe 400+) cars heading into Singapore, and Singaporean cars, true to form, did not queue.

Long story short, I missed the roadshow, but made it to Ann Hussein's just in time for dinner. Didn't even go home to unpack or change, arrived straight off the highway from Tuas Checkpoint - how committed am I right? Ssshh, we don't like to use the word 'groupie' too often here.

Nasi lemak that was tarpowed over to Ann's very cool home/Gingerbread Studios, was awesome. This was my first time at Ann's - I KNOW RIGHT? The season's almost over and this was my first time there! I love her place. Its two 4-room flats combined into one - 2 Become 1 (cue cheesy Spice Girls music). One side houses the house, the other, the studio. By the way Kak Ann, if you're reading this, it was me who walloped all the teh susu. Couldn't help myself, must have had 4 or 5 rounds - soooo yummy!

Once we got done with dinner, it was everyone into the studio to do the songs. Sorry for the low quality vid, lighting was low so its a bit grainy. Plus the room was small :) Here are your Top 12, workin' out the kinks in their medleys...

So while the Idols were busy going in and out of the studio for vocal rehearsals for their various medleys/solos etc, those not involved would chill outside. Farhan decided to hook up to Ustream, live webcast woot! It was super fun chatting with fans. Someone actually said I looked young - woot!

Here are some vids shot while just waiting around doin' nothing. Tabby slept for the most part and Sylvia was on Ustream for the most part. Somewhere in between Farhan and Justin whipped out some music video maker programme on their macs and they had fun 'filming' music videos for the webcam! Iz got a vid of them making the vid (it was so dark, whatever I video-ed didn't turn out), so look out for it when he uploads it! Am waiting for Farhan to upload his actual vid...

Anyway, in the meantime, here's what I shot with my trusty e71 while people were waitin' around...

I really enjoyed just hangin' out with the Top 12, it was like old times, like when the Spectaculars first began, and we stayed back for late night keychecks, chatting, singing, etc. It was nice to have the whole gang back together :) Syltra and MJ were sorely missed though...

It was also kinda perfect that it happened then, in the midst of the flurry of activity that is 'getting-ready-for-the-finals'. It was a nice 'breather' from the stress of the finals. There was no stress at Ann's, just friends hangin' out and watchin' a little MTV (it was on throughout ok....and in some of the vids, you can see Duane/Sylvia/Malaque step up and dance in the back - they said 'don't film me my cacat dancemoves, so I didn't).

Somewhere along the way, Tabby woke up and she and Duane hooked their headphones up to the same iPod and started singing together :) so cute....

I loved how Tabby knew the super fast lyrics to Check On It...sigh, I miss Tabby bein' on the show. And yes, Tabby went back to sleep shortly after this, ....on a different couch. I saw her tweet later that she 'shouldn't have slept so much at Ann's now I'm wide awake', at about 2am. LOL :)

Well, that was my night at Ann's. Next post - choreo :)

Hope you enjoyed the vids, and can kinda figure out what the line up is for Sunday.
