Ellen On Idol!

Ellen : "My Point,..... And I Do Have One...."
Thats the name of Ellen's first book (I have it, and I love it, I read it over and over again for a laugh whenever I'm between books), and I hope that will be her judging style too. I mean, taking Paula's chair doesn't mean she has to her 'pointlessness' right? Ooh, bitchy. I have no idea where that came from!

Woot! I'm super excited to see Ellen get on the panel this week.

I didn't even bother reviewing last week's audition eps because :
1. Denver with Posh was pretty much like Boston with Posh.
2. The "Road To Hollywood" episode that "promised" to showcase the best of the best auditionees was basically a clip show from the different audition cities. Seems more like Fox's last minute rabbit-outta-the-hat-trick to make up an extra episode so they could start Hollywood Week in a separate week. Either that, or it was producers' way of highlighting more of the Top 24's stories that didn't get fair showing in earlier eps. Y'know, they gotta build profiles and backstories mah...

Aiyo, I was so bored, I kept looking at the clock. Longest hour ever spent watching American Idol. Fair enough there were some pretty good singers we hadn't seen before, but overall...*yawn*....my favourite part was the trailer for 'Hollywood Week' hahaha.

So, since we're talking about Ellen and Hollywood week, which started taping like 2 weeks ago, everyone has probably heard about the whole 'Ellen hates Simon cos he was NINETY minutes late' debacle right?

If you haven't, well basically Ellen's been ranting everywhere (and I mean everywhere and to everyone, including producers) that the show would be better off without Simon. She was extra peeved cos she made an effort to shift her schedules around (and she is one super busy woman you know, daily talkshow leh) to do Idol and she was made to wait NINETY minutes for Simon to saunter in (apparently he's quite the diva)....

Some sources have said this situation is highly exaggerated and that Simon was like only fourteen minutes late.

I say...whatever. Just let me watch the episode already! Wednesday hurry up and get here already!

xoxo, s.

ps. In the meantime, I've scheduled a mini Idol reunion for Wednesday (IDOL DAY of course!) so I'll find out what everyone's been up to and pass the dirt on to you guys soon!

pps. More ridiculous AI rumours abound - apparently the buzz now is that risque deejay Howard Stern is being wooed to take Simon's place on the panel. Alls I can say is.....ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Previously tipped to take the Brit's mean spot were Gene Simmons (ech, no thanks) or Tommy Mottola (not a bad choice, but is does have personality?). I say again, how about Paul McCartney?

Tabitha & MJ's duet

Waaay back at Theatre Auditions and bootcamp, rumours were flying that Tabby and MJ had somethin'-a-somethin' goin' on on the side. Perhaps what they have is chemistry.

This is the original song Tabby and MJ wrote for duet day during Theatres. Flo was so impressed she wanted to put it on radio immediately. (Must ask her tonight when that's gonna happen.)

Are you lovin' this? I totally am.

I saw this vid quite a while back, and have been meaning to post it here. No better time than the present to remind us why these two are in the Top 12, and why this season of Idol really does have talent.

Remember people. Original song wei. Written overnight! :)

The Ruben Raj Debate

I should be sleeping...but I just read this post on the Official Blog.

Remember the guy the judges totally dismissed on Ep 3 because he was super late and to top that off he did not turn up for the workshop the day before?

Well the Official Idol Blogger has managed to find a vid of him singing. So you can see for yourself if the judges made a huge mistake and kicked out what could have been Singapore's next Idol.

Imho. Er, no la not really. Go watch and decide for yourself.

The Debate. Clearly there are SOME double standards being employed here as Izk pointed out, because Samantha Lee was also late and ALSO missed the workshop the day before. But where I think the judges drew the line was that Ruben apparently did not check in and give a reason for not attending the workshop (based on what you see on tv). Also, I'm guessing they based their decision whether to keep or cut on Samantha's and Ruben's first auditions too. I'm guessing they thought Sam could sing and has potential, whereas Ruben was probably an 'on-the-fence' case.

What did you think? Were the judges mean for not giving him a chance? Or do you think they did the right thing - tardiness should not be acceptable at this stage of the competition! Do you think Ruben could have been more 'committed' to Idol - at least call if you aren't coming? Should Samantha have been dismissed as well?

Kudos to Izk for picking up the story. Nice one dude, and thanks for the shoutout! Right back 'atcha!

You can catch Eps 1 - 3 right here (left side bar of this blog) or you can catch the on-air repeat on Channel 5 today (Saturday) at 6pm.

xoxo, s.

Singapore Idol 3 : Episode 3 Recap & Full Review

Maybe its my own fault, I set my expectations too high. I even sent The Kids and The Husband packing on the pretext of buying discounted bread at Centrepoint so I could indulge in Idol uninterrupted. With notebook and pen in hand, I sat down, Coke Zero (another indulgence) by my side and hit play (I recorded mah - was about 20 minutes behind... my son refused to be coerced into going kai kai!)

The show opens with Gurms and Hady taking a walk past our Top 100, sat on white plastic chairs, anxiously awaiting their fate at the TV Theatre lobby....

"They sang their hearts out. They cried. And they've gotten their golden ticket."

This year, each of the Top 100 are told to pack clothes for a week. If they make it through to the next round and the next and the next, they'll proceed straight to Idol Bootcamp without heading home.

So each morning (like on the Apprentice), they tote their trolley bags like good lil children to Caldecott Hill, never sure if they'll get to stay another night at the posh Idol digs for the week at the Orchid Country Club (OCC). (I wasn't allowed to reveal the name of the location before, but I posted about it anyway, check it out here.)

First hopeful we see step up to the mic is Duane "Pussycat Doll Dancer" Ho. He impressed judges with his 'Bottle Pop' dance move at the previous auditions. Today, Ken told him frankly, "I was trying very hard not to look at you. You sound better that way." OUCH!

Next up was Fathin Amira. I thought she looked great. Like she really listened to what judges said to her before about imaging. I was so happy for her, plus she didn't look so 'dazed' anymore (well maybe still a little, but it was a WHOLE LOT LESS than before! Good job on the makeover girl!) Then, basket, kena suan by Dick. Hello, do also die, dun do also die? How? I say, Fathin, you kicked butt, glittery butt, in that outfit - keep at it girl!

Chua Ai Ping. Sigh. False starts and forgetting lyrics aside, Gaga's 'Pokerface' does not work acapella. Sorry 3024. That was just cringe-y for me.

Best line from Dick tonight :
"You should see the joy in everyone's face when you screw up!"
(brutal, but true!)

Totally agree with Farhan 'The Hair' Shah (he certainly has a lot of hair doesn't he....apparently producers nicknamed him Zac Efron because of it) about Ken's cryptic comment about being 'special, but you must learn to be different'. *huh?*

Maybe Ken meant, that Farhan has the potential to be something special, a star, but in order to be star, he must first hone his personality and learn to stand out and be different....ta-daaaaa ..solid not? I can translate..cos I speak Uncle Ken.

Ryan Lee and Syltra Lee are NOT siblings. Here's some info they didn't tell you on the show...
Ryan's full name is Ryan Scott Santoso-Lee (so happening...Ryan are you Spanish or Indonesian by any chance?).

Syltra Lee is a wonderful mix of Chinese (50%), Indian (25%) and Malay (25%).
Awesome possum right? I like her voice. But girl, I don't think you want to pick a fight with Ryan, he looks like the type who will totally 'say it to your face' (and he did).

UPDATE : I believe they are totally great friends now. Spotted on someone's facebook posting somewhere!

Finally we have a genuine lookalike this year - Mohd. Sezairi Sezali is the spitting image of Najip Ali! And he can sing!

Next up would be #1896 Sylvia Ratonel. Very pretty girl, and she apparently had really good comments from her first audition. She can definitely sing, however, gotta learn to say 'th' for THE instead of 'de'...sorry, its my Grammarschool OCD behaviour comin' out again. Anyway. looks like she may just sail through, Ken has predicted she will be in the Top 10, saying 'Do not embarrass me.'
*actually Ken, even if she doesn't get the votes to get into the Top 12 (which I'm sure she will seeing as she's hot and can sing damn well), your judges' save can put her there :)

Other cuties who kena bambu-ed are Herizal Ellroy #1930 (seriously cute, but wahlaoeh, how come run out of breath mid-song? so wasted! tsk!) and Rachael Gan #3438 (cute in your Taiwanese/Japanese anime kawaii sense of the word). Actually, Rachael can really sing, she was a little pitchy but she has a pretty good voice.

Noor #2377. I remember her now. She sang MJ's 'Smile', one of the many MJ tributes we saw that day, and to be honest, her rendition made me yawn it was so slow. But whatever it is, you can't deny, Noor is a character. Too bad the singing didn't quite match up.

Latecomers are never tolerated in this industry. Never. Initially I thought the way the judges treated Ruben Raj #1234 (what a nice number!) was really mean and unnecessary, cos I mean, c'mon, its the guy's dream, give him a chance right? Well, on hindsight, he didn't show how much he wanted it. To not call/check-in with producers for an important workshop session is just irresponsible. If he can do it at this stage, chances are, he could miss a call time for a live show too.

Other latecomer Samantha Lee #2032 (also not related to Ryan and Syltra) had the best line of the night :
"I vomited in the morning."

Sorry girlfriend, the judges don't do pity. Dick really let her have it man.

Luckily Ken helped ease the tension by clarifying that today's lesson is : "Dun anyhow eat before an important date."

I was a little disappointed watching Tanna Tiew. Cancer girl had so much going for her, a great voice and a great story. I thought she would step it up tonight, but she seemed to retreat further into her shell, especially on Group Day. I hope next year, after she's had more time to recuperate and regain her confidence after her brush with cancer, she will try this again and not give up. I totally support her!

Two pretty power houses were up next. Cheryl Lim #1359 and Charlene Tan #2320.

Cheryl, 18, is a student who had to get her parents' consent to halt her studies if she made it through to the next round. Luckily her parents are supportive cos this girl can sing. She's also very pretty, looks a bit like Cheryl Tay, the Miss Singapore Universe who's a vet right?

Charlene Tan, we of course know from last week's profile where she talked about taking up singing part time after her mom had a stroke. She's such a sweetheart. Her phone call to check in on her mom really tugged at the heartstrings. I just wish someone would give her some makeup lessons so her face would fit her voice. Cos she's quite pretty, but looked plain next to all the other made-up contestants.

Speaking of good lookers, we were given another look at Gabriel Cheok tonight, and I swear, he has got to be the cutest guy on this season of Idol.

What you didn't get to see was the judges, Ken especially putting him and brother Jonathan on the spot. Ken basically asked them what they would do if there were only ONE spot left in the Top 24. Who'd get it?

Initially both brothers didn't answer, then, when pushed, they each answered 'themselves'. Then Ken turned the tables on them again and said something along the lines of them being terrible brothers (LOL). It was an evil trick question guys.

Evil bus stunt. Back in July when they were filming this, producers told me about the 'bus stunt' results reveal. I thought it was a brilliant twist. And totally unexpected. I'm fairly sure a lot of drama ensued, but it wasn't shown in tonight's episode.

Basically what happened was, there were 4 buses chartered to come pick up the Top 100. Everyone thought they would be heading to OCC for the results. 3 buses picked up their passengers and left for OCC. The last bus, picked up their passengers, then told them they would be making a slight detour to pick someone or something up from Reception. Once there, Ken boards the bus. And tells them that their journey ends here.

I thought it would have been kinder if Ken just said it out right. Without the misleading phrases.

The faces of those on that bus were just....heartbreaking.

Suffice it to say, clever plan, but somehow it didn't translate well on tv. Bad editing perhaps?

Group day was a huge mess. I would have liked to watch more of the contestants' practice time overnight at OCC rather than the actual auditions, cos thats where most of the drama is isn't it? In the middle of the night at the hotel. Where are all the shots of groggy contestants? Whining about sleep deprivation or other group members etc? Was sorely disappointed when it wasn't really shown. Maybe they were all hunky dory I suppose.

The only person who bitched about his group mate was Ryan, who was complaining aboutDaryl not having a sense of timing while he sang. Thats just whining. Thought there would be bitching :P *yawn*

Finally, for all the hoo-hah about Benjamin Chow, his hacker drama was not ever mentioned. Despite the limiting crutch, Ben seems fun enough. Let's see how his journey pans out next week. I'm waiting to hear about the results of the police investigation....juicy juicy.

End of show. Abruptly jump to credits which feature footage from next week (I hope its footage from next week, cos they never really said like 'on your next episode of...'). There are hints that they will address the whole Ben shebang next week....Ryan is seen saying 'Ben', and I've learned that Ryan Lee and Benjamin Chow were roommates at Bootcamp.

A topless guy (Theodore Teow) is seen saying, "I'll be quite regretful if he became the Idol",but whether he meant Ben or someone else, we will only find out next week.

So, what did you all think of Ep3? Share share below. So I know I'm not crazy when I say I wished there was more I could sink my teeth into.

Singapore Idol 3 : Episode 3 Review

Welcome to the Singapore Idol Theatre Auditions (Part 1).....

Check your phones (and pride) at the door, and we'll see you in 8 days (if you make it that far).
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the producers bag and tag each person's phone! (that's a lot of commodity - 100 phones! Am sure there are quite a few iphones in there!) Its like going to Club Med (in an alternate singing universe), where you're basically cut off from civilisation! Thank God for payphones right? (am sure Charlene Tan would agree with me, aw that phone call home to Momma was a heart-tugger!)

At this stage, we go from Top 100, down to 80, down to 60, down to 40 and finally, we end up with the Top 24 (12 girls and 12 boys) that will enter the Piano Show rounds. We'll know by the end of next week's episode who the Top 24 are.

Episode 3 showcased the first two days of Theatre Auditions : Acapella Individual (Day 1) and Group Day (Day 2).

Here's my short review of tonight's episode. (Full review to come later tonight.)

By and large, it was ok, but I thought it could have been more dramatic. Some parts of the show seemed disjointed, it didn't have the flow of Episode 2. My fingers are crossed that as the stakes get higher and the pressure mounts next week, the flow of the show will deliver the drama we're all waiting for.

Highlights : (based on tonight's show)
Acapella day was boring - typical 'forget-the-lyrics' type scenarios.
Group day was a mess.
Turban-ed girl was a real mess. Cut the put-ons dear. Seriously.
Chua Ai Ping, also a mess, but I like the girl - best attitude I've seen so far.
Ryan Lee and Syltra Lee, potential meowrr drama, but didn't happen - why lah? I thought Ryan was about to scratch her eyes out or something. But it was pretty evil how the judges made them single out someone they thought was bad - really know how to put the poor kids on the spot man!

Plus, I swear I saw a crying Jonathan Cheok in the trailer, so so drama, I was looking out for that - dun haf.
Also that crying girl soaking Gurmit's shirt, also dun haf.
All in next week's ep!
What a tease....grrr...still love that trailer (oops interstitial) though.

So what did you all think of tonight's show? Spot on? Loved it? Disappointed? Wanted more?
Share share share below k?

The end credits (which like SUDDENLY appeared with the weirdest 'rap' in the background) featured some interesting things coming up next week...
  • FIRST EVER IN IDOL HISTORY, Duet Day! Kudos to SI Producer who came up with the idea!
  • And look who's become all chummy chummy, 'portrayed-to-be-sworn-enemies' Syltra and Ryan Lee are seen ENJOYING their duet performance and each other's company? (initially I thought they were related cos they were highligted one after another with the same surname, now thinking about it, ick!)
  • Major blowout by Dick for Gabriel CheoBulleted Listk and Cheryl Lim (which I think resulted in the her big sobbing clip on Gurms' shoulder) .... kena 'suan' for not being able to play the guitar well enough..ouch!
  • And finally of course, the much anticipated reveal of the Top 24.

Can't. Wait.

xoxo, s.

ps. Posting this first, while I work on my full review of tonight's episode.

Introducing Your Top 100

Singapore, meet your Top 100 Idol hopefuls!

Out of over 4000 that came and auditioned for Singapore Idol, these lucky 100 get to experience the mental, physical and emotional torture that is the Theatre Auditions!

I decided to compile all the pics into one big collage because, well, individually they DUN LOOK SO GOODE. I mean, seriously, some of them looked like they were posing for a police mugshot. Very few (countable (is this a word??) on one hand) posed like a star! ALWAYS pose like a star for shows like this. Some looked so sleepy, some looked shell-shocked ("omg is that flash?!"), some looked like they just got back from walking their dog, others barely registered any expression, many stood stock still as if about to keel over from nerve gas. Aiyo. Think 'I'm A Star. I'm Gonna Win This. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Granted the camera used was probably a simple one that doesn't have auto photoshopping (some do these days, isn't that amazing?! Facelift its called!), but check out 1390! She's awesome at posing! Great smile, great pose - best pic of the lot! And for those with oily faces - BLOT (discreetly of course) BEFORE PICS! (Top 24 ...pls note hor)

Ok. Rant over. Congratulations Top 100!

Check out this fabulous Interstitial for next week's episode (if you haven't already) to get an enticing sneak peak at what's being served up next Wednesday night. Woohoo!

In the 2 minute promo above, its clear that there will be loads of drama. Typically at this stage, judges are harsher and don't hold back as they expect more from the contestants. At this stage, contestants are expected to (and should) be serious about the competition, but the reality is a lot of them still think they're on holiday camp.

For more behind the scenes info about the Theatre Auditions stages, check out my previous posts.

Check the left side bar for in-between posts as well.

Super duper chuppa chups excited to watch Ep3 now!
Its 12am on Friday August 14th, sigh. Wednesday is TOO FAR AWAY, I want to watch NOW! SI Producer - sneak preview can? I make homemade chicken rice for you...can? Taste like Boon Tong Kee, promise ;)

Singapore Idol Theatre Auditions, Day Four - The Last Mile

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Day 4 : Will the real performers please stand up!

Ok, so I know this post is a little late in coming, but I didnt actually get to attend the final theatre auditions session, so I got the next best thing, I watched the footage raw (unedited).

But I don't have any pics from the tv theatre cos I wasn't there. So you'll have to make do with just text and I'll try to keep it short! keyword - try!

They've sung they're way through rounds and rounds of preliminary auditions and beaten thousands of competitors to get this far. In just 3 days, the numbers have more than halved, as the final 40 face the judges one last time to hopefully make it into the Top24 of Singapore Idol 2009.

Today will be the toughest day yet.

1. Gone is the little room they first auditioned in, they now stand in a large hollow auditorium, on a big stage with flood lights glaring in their faces.

2. Gone are the days of singing mic-less and Acapella, they now have to deal with accompaniment (and you don't have friends to back you up when you slip up!)

3. No more group or duet outings. You're totally on your own on this one. No buddy energy to feed off or someone to share the jitters with. OR someone to blame if you f**kup!

4. Top that off with the pressure that this is your one last chance to make it to the next round, where the REAL competition starts (ie public voting!)

Scared not?

Stress not?
(say it the Ah Lian way k, not the Angmoh way, otherwise it doesn't work!)

Am sure if there were any contestants who told producers they weren't worried or stressed, either they don't take the competition seriously (in which case hopefully they don't make it) or are bluffing to save face.

NOT A GOOD DAY TO SCREW UP.

Usually by this final day of the Theatre Auditions, if you hang around the idol contestants enough, you'll hear a lot of whispering, because they're saving their voices for that last burst.

Many are weary and bleary-eyed from lack of rest, and I'm sure they held back on the complaining (with so many seasons of Idol behind us, we ALL know having a sore throat, feeling sick etc are all excuses the judges don't buy).

The Idol competition is not for the weak and whiny.
(Seriously, there were instances in season 1 when Taufik was so sick, but no one could tell. You couldn't tell he was so sick he actually threw up twice right before he had to go on and perform. He walked on stage and beamed a smile like he was on top of the world, and got some of the best comments from the judges to boot!)

Last night, those still in the running were given a list of 10 songs to choose 1 from :
1. If Ain't Got You - Alicia Keys
2. You And I Both - Jason Mraz
3. Heaven - Bryan Adams
4. The Man Who Can't Be Moved - The Script
5. Killing Me Softly - Aretha Franklin version
6. Love Song - Sara Bareilles
7. I'll Be There - Michael Jackson
8. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis
9. Unwell - Matchbox 20
10. Stop And Stare - One Republic

Top 2 choices were If I Ain't Got You and Killing Me Softly. Watching the tape, I was so impressed. There were some really awesome renditions.

There was one performance of Killing Me Softly, played on the guitar. It was the contestant's own take on the song and for the first time, I saw that person come out of their shell (as a performer). That is WITHOUT A DOUBT, MY favourite performance to date! Imho, this person is definitely a dark horse to be reckoned with if they make it through to the Top24.

In fact, quite a few contestants who weren't as 'stand out' as before seemed to come out of their shell when the guitars were whipped out.

I'm so glad producers changed it up this year and allowed them to play instruments. I love it because it makes them more confident performers, like they seem to feel more at ease and assured. My guitar will shield me from the judges' comments!
(Sometimes people just need a comfort item to give them that little confidence boost. I, for one, am totally comfortable being a bitch if I've got my big Gucci sunglasses on :), but take my sunglasses away and I'm the resident doormat again!)

And somehow, watching an 'artiste' in their element, its magical, especially when they're all emo and caught up in the song/performance. Think Matt Giraud at the piano and Kris Allen on the guitar. Its a part of them, and every time they performed with, they gave better performances.

Random info : Least fave song choices were Unwell and Stop & Stare. Wonder why? Pretty good songs wat!

I heard from producers that it was the most gruelling day for everyone because the hours were long and the way they delivered the results was very emotional. Apparently the judges were totally drained at the end of the night (but happy). Also, apparently almost everyone cried! Get out those tissues people! Another exciting episode to watch! Can't wait!!

I'm guessing they probably delivered the news to each contestant individually, whether they got through or not. Perhaps like this season's American Idol where they had to walk like A MILE from one end of a mansion/building to the other end. Or maybe they did the simpler thing like Season 7 of AI, where contestants just walked across a large (VERY LARGE) room (after taking a crazy long lift ride). Either way, quite scary stuff la, walking in silence with 3 pairs of eyes looking at you expectantly ('is my fly up? should I smile? damn, shouldn't have had that Oreo, now my teeth could be black! Can they see me shaking?' <-- A long walk allows too much time to entertain thoughts like that!)

Hrm, which one.... recession right? MUST be the lift scenario <--- No one will tell me its so SECRET!! (In fact, I have no idea how results are delivered on each of the Theatre Audition days, so PRODUCERS - it better be good when I watch it in August!)

OH one more thing, I hope (sorry, this is evil, but I love it, good for drama mah!) judges did the 'Sing Off' thing.
You know, where they call two contestants in and ask them to sing right there, in front of them, to see who's worthy of that ONE spot. Evil. I know. And usually, they pick two contestants who are friends to up the emo quotient! EVIL-ER! (And then, send one packing - EVIL-EST!!!) (Kids if you are reading this, Mommy's just joking, EVILer and EVILest are NOT real words :))

To those that made it through - CONGRATULATIONS you guys!
You're the Top 24 of Singapore Idol 2009 (give yourselves and each other a pat on the back - well done!

"Enjoy" the next four days of Bootcamp! Hopefully you're all not too zombied from the last four days and can still function like a human being!

Next post - Welcome to the Singapore Idol Bootcamp!

Xoxo, s.
