Jill-Marie Thomas + Sylvester Sim

Rock Chick meets the original Singapore Idol Rocker
Quiet in person, but ready to rock it out on stage is the Sylvester Sim I know. And according to Jill-Marie, the rocker affectionately known as Sly to his loyal fans, he's still the same.

When I found out that Jill was pairing up with Sly, I wondered how it would work. I haven't seen Sly since we worked on Shooting Stars, the Idol-drama series that was released soon after the first season of Idol ended. His storyline was the most interesting one of the show. He was also busy working on his first album back then for BMG. I saw him for the first time in five years today, he was on his way out of Mediacorp, after a rehearsal will Jill, and he's still the same, soft-spoken Sly I remembered. I can't wait to catch up with him again tomorrow at the recording.

A little bit about Sly ...
Sylvester Sim was known as 'The Rocker' back in 2004 when he won the hearts of many a young girl (and I'm sure a large number of aunties) during the very first season of Singapore Idol. Each week, his endearing manner and shy smile (even Uncle Ken would ask him to 'smile' more) won him votes. He was not without scandal, a bad romance with a fellow contestant and some family problems surrounded him, but what pulled him through was his love for music and the fact that this boy could sing. He made it to the grand finals at the Indoor Stadium and fulfilled his dream of performing to a huge 8000-strong crowd, and was later offered both a recording contract and an artiste management contract, just like winner Taufik Batisah. Since then, he has released a Mandarin album, travelled to Taiwan, worked on a tv series and joined another reality singing competition. And now, although the spotlight hasn't been on him all the time, Sly still rocks it out by headlining gigs. He's currently at Dragonfly and shows no sign of stopping in his pursuit to make music.

Check out this youtube video of one of his older songs, its called 'The First Reason'. He's got a good voice and that 'Taiwanese' pop appeal.

For tomorrow night's show, Jill and Sly will be singing Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl". That is totally a rock out song! Don't know it? Aiyo, where have you been? Check out this iPod ad and it should sound familiar :)

Click here for the full song.

Jill says its gonna be 'her' version of the song, and as we all know, Jill is the queen of re-arrangement. And Sly just has a presence on stage. So I reaaaallly cannot wait to see what these two are gonna be like performing together. Woot!

Catch them Live at tomorrow's One Moment of Glory! recording - come down to Mediacorp by 7pm for tickets at reception! Or watch the show this Wednesday, 8pm only on Channel 5.

xoxo, s.

ps. If you're coming, bring banners and posters to support your favourite contenders/collaborators. I've got my earplugs at the ready - I'm prepared for the uber loud screaming that will be Sly's fans.

pps. I couldn't resist, here's one last vid, Sly singing 'There With You', the song written by Ken Lim for him for his role on Shooting Stars.
